It was another great weekend in the Bluff City and here's all I did!
Friday I made a quick trip by South Main's Trolley Night. If you don't know what Trolley Night is, then let me explain. It's a street party in the South Main Arts district that features live music, good food and a chance to mix and mingle with other Memphians. It takes place on the last Friday of each month. The weather was perfect for a night out strolling.
Saturday I went to check out Field Day for Grownups that was put on my the New Memphis Institute. Think about it, all the games we played as kids being played as grown ups! I always say growing up was the worst decision I ever made, so this really took me back to a much simpler time.
The turn out was pretty good, but I was a bit disappointed. I hear so often that there's nothing to do in Memphis and here was the perfect example of something really cool and different to do. I'm starting to believe some just like complaining. Not only was this event free (only required registration online), but it also came with a free beer and a free meal from a food truck! Can you really beat that? Memphis offers so many cool things to do, but you have to actually want to get out and do things. If we want a better Memphis, then we have to actually be better Memphians! I salute New Memphis Institute for this awesome idea. No, they didn't pay me. I doubt they even know I exist lol.
I also made the drive down to Oxford, Mississippi to watch the Memphis Tigers face off against the Ole Miss Rebels. Memphis played pretty good up until the 4th quarter. A few mistakes sealed their fates but they fought hard. I will say that Ole Miss had a very hard time stopping the Tiger offense. Turnovers were the key to this game. The Ole Miss fans were really quiet in the 3rd when Memphis brought the game within reach at 27-21. I thought the comeback was about to happen, but a few mistakes and bad field position were the dagger in the upset.
I learned a few things in Oxford.
- The Grove is crazy crowed and an insane party before the game. Tiger Lane should be like that.
- The fans outside the stadium were very nice. The fans inside were sort of rude and obnoxious.
- I saw a guy in a Confederate flag shirt...it was very odd. I didn't know how I should feel about it.
I worked for the first half of the day, but then I met up with E Money and Jim Walker for brunch on the patio of Blind Bear. Sunday's weather was simply amazing. I could have taken a nap on that patio and not been ashamed about it at all. It was either the weather of the biscuits and gravy that got me. Maybe the mimosas or the Irish coffee....who knows.
I'm also taking applications for Sunday Funday team members. I recently made a Facebook status wanting less "let's chill at the house" friends and more "hey, let's go do this" friends. If you really know me, you would know how much I hate sitting at the house. I did start a new Netflix series called F is for Family though. it's really funny. I'm also going to have to check out Stranger Things. Just have to find the time.
