See that mural? Yeah the one at the top of this post. Well, I saw that driving down the street. What street? I can't give you all that info because I want you to find it for yourselves. Well, that mural means so much to me. I think it's pretty obvious that I love Memphis. It's not that love that's half full, or half empty. It runs deep!
I grew up Memphis. I was born at Baptist East hospital. I've lived in Whitehaven, South Memphis, a very brief stint in Orange Mound, raised in Westwood, and eventually we got a little money and moved to Hickory Hill and Fox Meadows. I went to Shelby County Schools and graduated from a Memphis City School.
I went to Crystal Palace and East End skating rinks. I went to Denim and Diamond and Club 2001 on high school nights! Shout out to The Spot aka 616 Marshall Street aka 616 aka whatever name it changed to every other week.
I know Jack Pirtle's gravy is made from Magic. I know Gibsons has the best doughnuts. I know I'm an expert judge of BBQ based on being born here. I know Liberty Land and Channel 5 wrestling were everything. I know I only trust my weather to Dave Brown. I know to never go to Voodoo Village alone or with a half empty gas tank. I know Jerry's Sno Cones is the best place in the city. Most importantly, it will always be Memphis State to me!
See Memphis is more than just some city to me. I deeply care about this big ole town. I care about how others see this city as well. WhenI was in the military, I would tell people I was from Memphis and there would be a little gasp or a comment about how dangerous it was. This always infuriated me. My city isn't that bad. My city can't be the laughing stock around the country. Not on my watch.
That's led me to this blog and this post. I want to show people that Memphis is more than crime and violence. Yes we do have our fair share, but so do other cities. I want to show all Memphis has to offer. I want to show how awesome the Bluff City really is.
I take great pride in not only this city but being a Memphian. I proudly say "mane" "bruh" and "junt" everywhere I go! I even throw in a few "you heard me" for safe measure. I even have a huge blue M tattooed on my arm, which is always a great conversation starter! I got it because I lost a bet by the way.
I believe if all Memphians take that same pride and ownership, this city would turn around instantly! This city has potential and oozes with talent and soul. We have to all work together and make it better instead of leaving for greener pastures in Atlanta, Dallas, Nashville, or Houston. I've been to all those cities and they don't have the same feel and love as Memphis does
This fading mural on the side of a wall has truly inspired me. Memphis is Tennessee and I am Memphis. I'm going to do my part in helping show the positives and many things this city had to offer. This is my city and I won't let it anyone bad mouth it. We don't bluff here. We don't take any mess from anyone. This is home and you protect your home.
So fellow Memphians, we gonna make this River City grass green or run away from the task at hand?
