Flava House Quick Review

IMG_4082.JPG

I want to start off by saying I’m always more lenient with Black owned businesses. Always. Why? Well, I don’t think Black owned businesses always get a fair deal in most cases. They are constantly judged by past bad experiences at entirely different establishments. Some of that is accurate feedback and some is just a crazy customer. Yes, there is a such thing as a bad customer. I want to see all Black owned businesses flourish and thrive.

THE BAD

Ok, the service is pretty bad. Before I get any backlash, I must explain that I went on 3 different occasions just to give them the best chance possible to change that opinion. That’s the reason I held off this review. Be prepared. It’s definitely not the worst I’ve ever had but its pretty common in that area. I want so much more for Hickory Hill. They are also pretty pricey and the menu isn’t clearly defined.

THE GOOD

The food is awesome! Omg! Those jerk lamb chops are some of the best I’ve ever had! I believe they are made to order, so there will be a little wait. With that wait you’ll be rewarded with pure excellence. I paired mine with fried okra, which also was very good. I actually love the fact they are located in Hickory Hill. That part of town needs all the love it can get and for that I thank establishments like Flava House and The Wing Guru for servicing those areas.

In closing, I will say I recommend you going to check out Flava House, but with some concessions. I’m willing to overlook service for exceptional food. Hell some places with bad service have the best foods. I will say it’s more than worth it to try it out.

Why I Bought a $79 Umbrella.

IMG_5077.JPG

Yes, I know what you’re thinking. Did Mike just say he spent $79 on an umbrella? Yep! I know I could simply buy a cheap umbrella from a dollar store that I wouldn’t particularly care about losing. So why did I spend $79 on something I could have for $5 anywhere? Simply because I didn’t want just another cheap umbrella and I got tired of getting wet. Also, I ain’t balling, but I wanted a nice umbrella.

IMG_5087.JPG

Before you close the page, let me explain. The umbrella in question is the Classic Umbrella from Blunt Umbrellas.  I’ve long believed an umbrella was an accessory that a man didn’t need. I can just run to my destination, right? I’m manly and too cool for that, right? Another item to lose. I totally agree with all those logical points, but why is an umbrella not manly? All the classy fellas seem to carry them, so why not the average man? I love showers, but I don’t necessarily want to take one with my clothes on. Why do I arrive wet and have to shake water off like a caveman? (No offense to any cave people.) All in the name of being viewed as macho?

Sure it looks familiar but this umbrella has some pretty cool tech. It’s super light weight, can withstand a Category 5 hurricane and even has a pocket for a Tile so you don’t lose it. Ok, I might have over exaggerated the hurricane part, but all the others are factuals. Just open it once and you’ll see what I mean. It’s totally different. The opening mechanism is so fluid and smooth. The other cool thing about this umbrella is the 5 year warranty! So that $79 ain’t so bad.

All I can say is that I’m sold. At a certain point you just get tired of getting wet. Fellas, this umbrella also makes you look totally swagged out and what better way to impress that lady at the office than by pulling out that umbrella and walking her to her car? Classy move Ace! See where I’m going with this? Blunt Umbrellas come in lots of colors to match your style and there are also less expensive options, like the Metro line. Go check them out online at www.bluntumbrella.us and their super cool IG page. Ladies, this would be a great Father’s Day gift! Wink Wink.

My thoughts on the Black Panther Movie

My thoughts on the Black Panther Movie

IMG_0002.JPG

I've held in my review of Black Panther long enough. I gave you all ample time to go see the movie and now it's time to talk about this film. I will talk about the pros and cons in addition to my own theories on the upcoming Marvel films. So here’s your final warning before the spoilers happen.

Pros

  1.  First and foremost, one time for the culture. I loved that aspect. Having a superhero that looks like me is amazing. I didn’t think it made a big of a deal until I actually saw the movie. So for the culture is was amazing.
  2. The action scenes were great. The car chase seen was dope and the battle inside WaKanda was  also visually good.
  3. Wakanda’s technology is on a whole new level.
  4. The story is pretty good. (More on that later.)
  5. The supporting characters steal the show. Killmonger is an amazingly awesome foe to T’Challa. Mbaku was menacing yet fair. Nakia and Shuri were both great.
  6. The Black America/ African struggle was finally addressed. There’s always been this thing amongst us and for good reason. I’m glad it was a central point of the movie.

Cons

  1. The ending was hella cheesy bro! Like you end with a spaceship in the hood? I also hated the fact the kids at the end wanted to break down the ship and sell the scrape parts. Like damn could you not make us look that bad?
  2. Killmonger’s death. Man, I really didn’t want him to die because the character was played perfectly. He was very relatable and had good intentions. He just wanted to go about it in a bad way.
  3. T’Challa is a very boring character. Everyone overshadows him and he’s not a very aggressive or brash person. He tends to just be in the scene while not owning it. Every other character is more momorable. Hell his mother, played by Angela Bassett, was more memorable.
  4. The story is just ok. It seems to be worse if Killmonger is in fact dead. I also felt Klaue died a little too soon.
  5. The CGI wasn't as good as other Marvel movies. I get the budget was probably smaller, but it wasn’t up to the level of recent Marvel flicks.
  6. Some of the fans are a bit extra. I totally get dressing up for the movie. I dressed up for Star Wars so I get it. Calling whites colonizers or making ape sounds when they speak is a bit much. I think this movie had a clear agenda and it will cause some to take it a bit too far.

Predictions/Upcoming Theories

  1.  Killmonger lives. I think T’Challa takes him back inside and brings him back hoping for a change in Killmonger.
  2. Klaue is possibly still alive and Killmonger basically just snuck is body inside Wakanda
  3. Bucky will become the White Wolf. It seems Shuri has cured Bucky and cured his Winter Soldier issues. I also think this spells the end for Steve Rogers as Captain America. Bucky eventually become Captain America in the comics.
  4. Wakanda definitely is sitting on top of the Soul Stone and Thanos knows it. He coming for that Infinity Stone first. He will also have access to vibranium. We are kinda tipped off to this in the trailers.
  5. I don’t think we will see Storm any time soon. I really like Nakia, but I know she will eventually turn on Black Panther. I think to see Storm there will need to be another lead up X-Men movie. Maybe Black Panther just makes a cameo in that film.
  6. I'm going to go out on a limb here and pricy who I believe dies in the first Infinity Wars film. I believe Drax definitely dies and probably first. I believe Hawkeye finally did as well. I have a feeling Vision dies and his Infinity Stone is taken. I also believe Steve Rogers hands over the Captain America title to Bucky. For shock value, I think Loki dies as well.

Those are my thoughts and theories. How did you like the Black Panther movie. Send me a comment and let me know!

Review - Papa Bear Skins

I'm switching things up a bit over here at one901.com. I decided I needed a little bit of camera time from time to time. Not sure why anyone would wanna see my mug, but hey that's not the point.

I'm here to tell you guys about Papa Bear Skins. I've always liked pork rinds and thought they were pretty basic. Well, Papa Bear Skins has changed my mind with their awesome selection of flavors. They have the standard BBQ and Hot and Spicy, but they also have Ranch and Lemon Pepper. Yes, lemon pepper! There are also other flavors as well.

Here's my 1 min review of Papa Bear Skins! Excuse the focusing issues. Still learning the habits of this new lens.

You can find where Papa Bear Skins are sold and updates on their Facebook and IG pages

The King of Funky Town Returns

_DSC3905.jpg

Yes, you read that right! Playa Fly is back in a major way. I got to sit down and chop it up with the Memphis hip hop legend recently and he revealed a music video to his hit "Ghetto Eyes" would be dropping shortly. I almost lost my mind because "Ghetto Eyes" is a personal favorite of mine. The brash delivery and lyrical firepower mixed with a message that still resonates to this day will always keep the track near and dear to me.

I'm excited legendary artists are releasing music videos to their classics lately. It shows the newer generation that there was a time when lyrics meant way more than a catchy hook and a dope beat. A song actually had to have a message to be accepted in the hip hop communities. That's not a knock on all new artists, but overall the lyrical quality has faded.

I got to get a sneak peek at the new music video and I have to say that it definitely tells a story that many will identify with. You'll definitely have to pay attention to the lyrics. It's not a crunk, feel good track. It's raw, dark and tells the story of a person that sees the world differently based upon the cards life has dealt him.

Here's a sneak peek at the upcoming video!

The full video is set to drop on 12-29-17. Check out Playa Fly’s IG page (@playaflym3) and FB (Playa Fly) pages for more details. I’ve got my fingers crossed on a video for “Nobody Needs Nobody”. Especially if I get to help in the production!

Tennessee Taco Co Review

Tennessee Taco Co Review

 Dope edit, right?

Dope edit, right?

Memphis has another taco spot! That in itself is awesome because tacos are my absolute favorite thing to eat and having more options is always welcomed. When I heard Tennessee Taco Co was coming to the space Los Compadres once occupied, I was so excited for a different take on tacos.

The decor of this place is awesome. The huge mural and blue tones truly set this place apart. It's not like anything I've ever seen before. Think Festival of the Dead meets a huge box of crayons. There's plenty of space inside and outside. Speaking of outside, they have an awesome patio! What’s better than margaritas on a patio? Nada!

DSC00583.jpg

Ok, let’s get to why you’re really reading this article; the food. The first thing you have to understand is that there are literally 24 taco choices. Yes, we counted them. There could be more, but we got tired lol.  With that being said, there might be too many choices. It’s not quite as bad as say a menu at Cheesecake Factory, but it took a minute to get through all the choices. For those that don’t eat meat, there are also plenty of vegetarian choices as well.

She’s obviously happy about her food!

She’s obviously happy about her food!

I settled on the Remember the Alamo and Gus’ favorite. The Remember the Alamo is shredded chicken with pico, jalapeños and queso while the Gus’ favorite is fried chicken with cheddar, bacon, pico and chipotle ranch. My daughter went with queso dip with a side of tater tots. That queso though!! It was awesome! There’s something unique about those tater tots. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but they taste different than other tater tots.

IMG_8569.JPG

The Remember the Alamo chicken was very good. Like really good. Go for that shredded chicken! I will say that the red onions in the pico really took away from the tacos. There was just way too many and the chunks were really big. I found myself removing them because there were just too many. That was really my only knock.

IMG_8564.JPG

I think Tennessee Taco Co is worth the visit. I’m going back to try more options myself. You can really never go wrong with tacos anyways. They are always awesome. Go check them out and tell me what you think. If you’ve already been, drop a comment and let me know what I need to try on my next visit.

Dessert Therapy

IMG_8186.JPG

I love sweets! I really do. No, I really really really love sweets. My dentist also loves me. I get sweets and he gets paid. Life's better when everyone wins.

I recently stumbled upon this dessert spot called Dessert Therapy. Doesn't that just sound amazing? This sounds so much better than sitting in a couch talking about my problems. Anyways, I found it through Yelp while searching for blueberry muffins near my job. There were no muffins, but boy was this place awesome!

 Sweets!!

Sweets!!

 Drools

Drools

I got in as they were closing so they didn't have a lot left over from the earlier rush. They still had more than enough for my taste buds. The owner, I forgot his name sorry, walked us through the process and the specials. We were overwhelmed with the possibilities. I settled on this beauty:

 Behold, the cupcake sundae

Behold, the cupcake sundae

The cupcake sundae!  Basically, it's a cupcake cut in half and ice cream in the middle. A cupcake ice cream sandwich if you will. That thing was awesome. I'm no fan of frosting, but that frosting in this little piece of heaven was really good.

 Cake Pops!

Cake Pops!

The kid settled on a cake pop and a chocolate lava cake because she can't just have one. They were both kid approved even with Maddy's strong hate of dark chocolate.

Dessert Therapy is definitely a place you should try out. It's located at 6645 Poplar Ave Suite 109 in Germantown inside the Carrefour.  The hours are a bit weird. They normally close around 7pm Monday through Wednesday, 8pm on Thursday and 9 Friday and Saturday.  You can also check out their website www.desserttherapybar.com

Hurry up and go get some dessert!
