So I Went To Atlanta

So I went to Atlanta. The land of Waffle House, Chik Fil A, and trap music. Atlanta is like Memphis’ older cousin that went off to an HBCU and now dresses different. Not that Memphis is uncultured or lacking, Atlanta is just a little different. It’s got that big city vibe with the Southern charm we all love. I have a love hate relationship with the city.

The first day pretty much set the tone for the entire trip. I booked a room at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Downtown Atlanta on Peachtree. Looked very nice from the online pics on Hotel.com. We get there and it’s crazy booked with what appeared to several conferences. Check in took about 15 mins but there were only a few elevators and the wait times were horrible. The room was located on the 14th floor. The views from the room of downtown Atlanta were dope though.

Next up was a trip to Gus’ chicken. Yeah I know. I went to a spot in Atlanta that we had in Memphis. So what? Sue me! The experience was so trash I want even talk about it. Step your game up Gus in Atlanta. Y’all tripping mane. Next up was a walk to Centennial Park and an adventure to find a Walgreens. After that a trip to SunTrust Park to see the Atlanta Braves play.

Let me just say this. The area surrounding the stadium is amazing. There are shops, bars, eateries and even apartments all located inside this area. It was so dope. Memphis needs something similar. The stadium is amazing. I’ve been to several major league parks and this one was the best. They also had a Waffle House and a Chik Fil A inside. Naturally I had to find a bar inside. Come on you guys know me.

Day 2 started out great. We visited a market in the Edgewood area that was so nice. I loved that there were butchers, farmers and little shops to eat all in one. Memphis, take notice mane. We got there a bit too early so most of the shops weren’t open yet. Since I’m an avid bruncher, I decided to hit up a spot that was close by. It was called BQE Restaurant and Lounge. I think a Trap Brunch was going on when we walked in. It was packed as soon as we walked in at 10AM. We were told since we didn’t have a reservation that we could sit in a section but had to be done in an hour. An hour! A time limit on brunch? Not only that but their regular mimosa was priced at $13 each! Yes regular champagne and OJ in a glass was $13! They also offered bottomless mimosas for $28 per person and you couldn’t share. At this point I was done. The server let us split a bottomless but I was not too happy about it seeing how we still had that 1 Hour time limit. Thankfully the food was good.

Later that day I did a maternity shoot for a good friend of mine and tweaked my back a little. We went to a very nice steakhouse downtown called Cuts. Now this place was nice and our server Gary was amazing. He is from Montreal and gave some great life lessons. The evening ended with me laid out like an old man watching the new season of Stranger Things and still complaining about those $13 mimosas.

Sunday was check out day. I was so ready to get back to Memphis. Y’all do remember the mimosas were $13, right? Not sure if I mentioned that. We went to Waffle House because the Atlanta Breakfast Co was insanely packed then took a visit to the World of Coke. It was a good experience. Very crowded but it was nice. Here’s a pro tip. Don’t buy the surprise bags. You’ll be surprised by the money you wasted. We tried to go to the Trap Museum, but the line was about 3 blocks long. Maybe next time.

That was Atlanta! Nice place to visit but I could never live there. They will literally run you off the highway if you don’t go at least 120 mph. 3 days was more than enough. I do have to admit that the customer service at the Atlanta Waffle House is way better than anything I’ve experienced in Memphis. There staffed actually liked their jobs. While I did enjoy Atlanta, I’m still pissed the mimosas were $13.

A Stout I Actually Like

I love beer. I really love beer. I’m no beer connoisseur by any means, but I know what I like and what I don’t like. I don’t go around looking for a hint of this or a drop of that. I just drink it and either love or hate the taste. I tend to stick to Ales, Hefeweizen, and every now and then the fruit based beers. I normally stay away from the IPAs and Stouts.

New Vlog!!

Hey y’all! I don’t vlog much but I do love doing it. If I didn’t have to hold the camera and look like a weirdo walking down the street talking to myself, I would totally do it more. I decided to vlog my latest adventure. I was asked to joint the guys over at 247 Memphis at Memphis’ hottest new restaurants, The Gray Canary, to discuss sports and food. I decided to vlog about what I saw. Check it out!

I Got a Philly in Philly and Caught a 76ers Game!

That title made me chuckle a bit, but we are just gonna roll with it anyways lol. I got a real Philly cheesesteak in Philadelphia and I’m so excited! I was super happy when I found out that I was going to training in Philly and began looking for places to get a cheesesteak. The people up here literally argue about who has the best cheesesteak. It reminds me of Memphians arguing about who has the best BBQ. I ended up listening to my friend Will Weeks recommendation of a spot called Tony Luke’s.

I Had My First Vegetarian Meal!

Yep! I did it! My first vegetarian meal! Only took 35 years to finally try it. Before I go into my thoughts, I would like to thank Kim Thomas (@kpfusion), Justin Fox Burks (@TheChubbyVegetarian), and his lovely wife Amy for making this all possible. I was totally hesitant to try something drastically new, but they assured me I would enjoy it. So what did I have?

The Vegetarian BBQ “Boss Man” Salad with Yogurt Ranch Dressing

The Vegetarian BBQ “Boss Man” Salad with Yogurt Ranch Dressing

The Chubby Vegetarian whipped up his Vegetarian BBQ “Boss Man” Salad recipe along with oven roasted potatoes and banana pudding. You can check out the recipe HERE.

So, how was it? The “BBQ” didn’t taste like pulled pork, but it was oddly similar. Maybe my eyes and tastebuds were playing tricks on me. I’ve never been a huge fan of eggplant, but this was very good. I’m thinking the BBQ sauce helped make it more enjoyable for me. I could definitely have it again. I have to say the yogurt ranch dressing was absolutely amazing! OMG! I want a bottle of it! Now, let’s talk about this super crazy dope banana pudding for a second. Now, that I could eat every single day. You know how hard it is to keep the cookies from being soggy at the bottom? Those cookies were super crispy! Shout out to Amy for that banana pudding. You’re the real MVP!

For a person that’s never eaten vegetarian food and has always been very resistant towards it, I must admit I was pleasantly surprised by the food. Now before everyone starts planning the parade for vegetarianism, I want to say that I totally couldn’t change completely over. I love my meat way too much, but I could definitely incorporate some of the dishes into my diet maybe twice a week. I want to thank The Chubby Vegetarian for not only being a super cool guy, but for not forcing any food on me. Sometimes people who are vegetarian or vegan want to change the lives of us or shame us about eating meat. Justin never did that and I totally appreciated that immensely. Go check him out on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for more vegetarian dishes. There’s also a matter of a Carrot-Dog that I need to explore! Also check out KPFUSION.com as well. She’s so freaking fashionable!

I Finally Went To Hattie B’s

So, I finally went Hattie B’s Nashville Hot Chicken. I put aside the Memphis/Nashville beef, which is totally a real thing, in the name of trying new food. See, that’s growth y’all.

I must say I was very impressed with the interior. It definitely vibes with the area it currently resides in. The patio is top notch and it’s covered!! It’s the perfect patio for brunching. I did notice Hattie B’s offers chicken and waffles on Sunday. I need to check to see what the mimosas situation is like. I pray they have mimosas. I need that patio in my life.

IMG_4815.JPG

So back to the chicken. I ordered the large white, which comes with 2 sides. It came with 2 huge breasts with the wings attached, which is way more than I was expecting. You can also choose the level of spiciness when ordering. There are levels to this mane. The chicken is pretty good, but I wasn’t overly impressed. I wasn’t disappointed either. Its kind of a toss up for me. Not great, but not bad either. If I could use an analogy it would be that Hattie B’s is kinda like the city of Nashville; very nice place but lacks soul. For the sides, I went with baked beans, southern style greens, and pimento Mac and cheese. Yes, my inner fat kid came out. Mac and cheese was kinda blah, but the baked beans were crazy good! Greens are one of those polarizing dishes. Everybody can’t make them and there are lots of variations. They were better than I expected. Someone knows what they’re doing. Did I mention the beans are amazing?

Would I recommend Hattie B’s? I wouldn’t say don’t go. It’s pretty good chicken and the prices are very good. It lacks a little in the seasoning department outside of just being spicy. I would probably go back if I’m in the area. I will certainly see what’s up with the brunch situation. I still think Gus’, Uncle Lou’s and Jack Pirtles are better options. No, I’m not just saying that because they are local. They just have a bit more of that soul that Hattie B’s lacks.

I Judged A Gumbo Competition!

Yep! You can add food judge to my resume! I was given the opportunity to judge the gumbo competition for the Rajun Cajun Crawfish Fest over the weekend and it was definitely a unique experience. The weather was absolutely dreadful! It was unsually cold in Memphis and the river was surging.

As far as the gumbo? Well, let's just say you can't go around eating everybody food. I tasted about 7 and none were anything to right home about. The first was the best but it needed some seasoning. One tasted like Lysol. Seriously, Lysol. I am thankful I got the opportunity to judge in spite of some not being very good. I met some really cool people.

Maciel's on Highland

Have you tried the new Maciel's on Highland? Before I ask that, have you tried the original Maciel's on Main St? If not, try them both now! The new Maciel's is less just taco business and more family and hang out oriented. Same great food, like the garlic shrimp taco and Huaraches, but with a crazy dope patio, that's half covered, and a really modern interior with a crazy cool mural. Taco Tuesday is coming up fast! Where will you be?

Check out that mural!

Check out that mural!

White Sangria. It was so good. Watch out! It made with gin.

Review - Papa Bear Skins

I'm switching things up a bit over here at one901.com. I decided I needed a little bit of camera time from time to time. Not sure why anyone would wanna see my mug, but hey that's not the point.

I'm here to tell you guys about Papa Bear Skins. I've always liked pork rinds and thought they were pretty basic. Well, Papa Bear Skins has changed my mind with their awesome selection of flavors. They have the standard BBQ and Hot and Spicy, but they also have Ranch and Lemon Pepper. Yes, lemon pepper! There are also other flavors as well.

Here's my 1 min review of Papa Bear Skins! Excuse the focusing issues. Still learning the habits of this new lens.

You can find where Papa Bear Skins are sold and updates on their Facebook and IG pages

Just another Sunday Funday

Sunday is for brunching! It's become a regular thing for me lately. I'm going on a mission to find some awesome brunch spots around the city. My plan was to try the newest spot, Watershed, but the line was crazy long and the parking wasn't very good. So I will have to attempt again later. I ended up hitting one of my favorite spots, Blind Bear, instead. Seriously, this place is like the show Cheers to me.

IMG_1053.JPG

Their Hungover like a Bear brunch is awesome. $3 mimosas y'all! I had biscuits and gravy, which comes with eggs and bacon for $13. You get a lot of food for the price and again $3 mimosas! I tend to go for the man-mosa. It's a spin on the mimosa by adding vodka to the mix of champagne and OJ. It's definitely a drink for the seasoned brunchers out there that want to get that buzz quickly lol.

IMG_1056.JPG

I can never just go to one spot on Sunday Funday. I have to go to 2 or 3 places before I can consider the day a success. I also have an insatiable sweet tooth. I had a nagging craving for cheesecake and the best I've had so far is from Aldo's. Yes, this pizza spot has amazing cheesecake! Also, their shrimp and polenta dish is to die for! Trust me on this and I believe it's only available at the downtown location.

Well that was my Sunday Funday. Next week will be a different spot. Any suggestions on places I must try? What are you favorite brunch spots? Comment or shoot me an email. Heck we can even brunch together!

Getting Away To Create

I often have multiple projects going on and don't realize how tired I really am most times. I usually find myself walking up to my laptop on the floor After a cat nap or getting sucked into watching countless reruns of Martin or Family Guy when I should be doing work.

I decided I would get out yesterday and try to accomplish some work and it was the best decision I've made in a while. I woke up early-ish and laid around for an hour checking social media then got dressed. I'm pretty sure I showered but that's not really important.

I decided to check out Cafe Eclectic on Highland. I got the waffold with sausage and sleep fresh squeezed OJ. I really good combo.

So did I get any work done? Well not really lol. I did offload some images from my camera and get some video files synced with audio. That counts as work, right?

I did take these cool pics while there though.

Well, I tried lol. I will attempt again this weekend. If anything, I can recommend Cafe Eclectic for breakfast or in general. Lol
