The best Shepherds Pie I've had.

Today for lunch I was in the mood for something warm and soothing to my soul. I could have gone the soul food route, but I don't necessarily want anything crazy heavy. I don't like to have that sleepy feeling at work after lunch. It ruins the rest of the day for me. As I was walking to my car, I realized that Shepherds Pie sounded like it was the move. The only place in town that I know of that offers Shepherds Pie is Brass Door over on Madison. So that's exactly where I pointed my car.

IMG_1910.JPG

Luckily I arrived early, because this particular day was also half price fish and chips day. I do love fish and chips, but I was on a mission. I had to have Shepherds Pie! I was also tempted by the fish of the day; blackened tilapia.

I held my ground and proudly put in my order for Shepherds Pie. The waiter gave me a look as if I should change my mind and go with one of the specials. Nope! The pie my guy!

Before

Before

Out, on a straight out of the oven cast iron skillet, came this thing of beauty. I nearly burned my hand trying to position this picture. This amazingly simple meal in composed of ground beef, carrots, peas, and gravy topped with mashed potatoes! It's like when you would mix all of your food into each other and eat it at one time. Maybe I'm the only one that does that.

After

After

You get a pretty big portion for $12. I would have to say it's a pretty reasonable price. I did contemplate getting those fish and chips for $5, but I really enjoyed the lunch and also a great conversation.

If you're looking for something, as my dad would say, that's going to stick to your bones and warm you up, try out the Shepherds Pie at The Brass Door. Let me know how you like it. Try it on Wednesday night as well. They have British Bingo that night. It's a highly addictive and frustrating version of Bingo.

Lunch at Elwood's Shack

Today I stopped by Elwood's Shack for lunch. This is one of my favorite lunch spot because they aren't stingy and give you huge portions! What's not to love about that?

image.jpg

Elwood's is one of those local cult favorites is a little off the beaten path. Literally! It's not technically on a street. It's actually in a parking lot! But like most Memphis cult favorites, they make up for those shortcomings with awesome food!

Today I had a huge lunch! I definitely bit off more than I could chew! I had the brisket taco and the half order of smoked jerk wings.

Under all that is brisket!

Under all that is brisket!

The brisket taco is definitely a two-handed affair. It's even to mouthfuls wide! Stuffed inside is a huge portion of BBQ Brisket with spring mix, avocado, tomorrow, onions, and a sauce that's to die for! It know it sounds like a really busy dish but it all goes very well together! The trout taco is also amazing!

It comes with pineapple!

The jerk wings are great as well. I ate maybe 1 because the taco was so big! Can we say late night snack!!

Definitely go check out Elwood's Shack if you're in the mood for some of the best food in Memphis. They located at 4523 Summer Ave in the Berclair area. You won't be disappointed!

Shoot me a comment if you like Elwood's or if you plan to go!

Lunch Shenanigans with Easy E

Lunch!! It's my favorite time of the day. I look forward to it and plan my entire day around lunchtime. It's my favorite meal of the day and usually my most expensive as well.

Today I went to lunch with one of my best friends, Emily aka Easy E aka E Money. Normally when we get together we talk about all our problems and it usually involves beer, wine, or mixed drinks....ok sometimes all of them!!

image.jpg

We took a trip to one of my favorite lunch spot in Memphis, The Second Line. They have a fantastic $10 and Take Your Ass Back to Work lunch special. I entree and a side for $10 after tax. You really can't beat it.

Easy E made me promise not to get my usual, The Verno. I went with the 1/2 roast beef with gravy and Swiss sandwich with red beans and rice.

Yum!!

Yum!!

E Money had the Cooter Brown style cheeseburger with fries. I think we secretly wanted each other's food after seeing the others plate.

Those fries are everything

Those fries are everything

The food was great. That was confirmed by the fact that all talking ceased, which is very rare. Let me stress this to you though, those Red Beans and Rice were amazing! I was literally scraping the bottom of the bowl for just a hint of them. Definitely try them if you're in the Overton Square area.

Heres the the fun part of hanging with Easy E, the selfies!! We take about 20 and we pride ourselves on never taking a serious photo lol. So here they are!!!

Go try Second Line and also snap some goofy selfies with your friends. Life's to short to be serious all the time!

Lunch at Sean's Cafe

Lunch is by far my favorite time of the day. I get to leave my 4 walled prison and get out in the sunshine! I love my job FYI. I just really really love lunch!

My coworker took me too one of his favorites spots called Sean's Cafe on Union Ave. Admittedly, I had never heard of this place but it was very good.

I had the gyro with fries and my coworker had the Greek Salad. Not only did the food look amazing, but it tastes great and the prices weren't too bad either.

Go check out Sean's Cafe if you're in the Medical District area. You will love it! Tell me about your experiences with Sean's Cafe on the comment section below!

Lunch in the Garden

It's Friday!! Basically the best day of the work week, assuming you work the standard Monday-Friday. Well Fridays for me usially include a trip to Dixon Gallery and Gardens to take part in the weekly Food Truck rodeo. It's a win win for me. Friday and Food!

I decided to have lunch from my friends at Food Geek food truck, though it was tough to decide with all the other tempting options that were available.

Food Geek never disappoints and I had the B.C.B.A.R. sandwich. I'm not entirely sure what that stands for, but it was amazing! I also got a side of their chipotle ranch potato salad.

So let's talk about this for a second. The sandwich was great. It's smoked buffalo chicken with bacon crumbles, avocado ranch, pickle and spinach. It all came together beautifully.

Chipotle Ranch Potato Salad

The potato was equally delicious. I'm not a fan of potato salad, but I'm made it a mission to try newer things. I was pleasantly surprised to find it was made with red potatoes! Oh how I love red potatoes!! It was really good and if you could see the completely cleaned bowl for verification, I would be slightly embarrassed!

Mexican Chocolate Popsicle

Mexican Chocolate Popsicle

I finished lunch off with a Mexican Chocolate Popsicle from MemPops! It's a chocolate Popsicle with a secret kick, cayenne pepper!! I was a bit hesitant but you only live once! It was very good and great on this warm, sunny day.

I truly enjoyed my lunch today. The good food combined with the beautiful scenery of Dixon Gallery and Gardens along with near perfect Memphis weather! Now it's time for a nap!!!

Sliding in for Lunch

I met up with two friends for lunch yesterday. We call our rag tag group the "Lunch Buddies". We are our own super secret lunch foodie group. I've already said way too much because the first rule of Lunch Buddies is that you don't speak about Lunch Buddies.

DISCLAIMER: This is not a review!

image.jpg

So now that I've broken the rules of Lunch Buddies, I will let you know where we went. We went to one of our favorite spots, The Slider Inn. The name always makes me giggle, but I also have an above average dirty mind.

The inside is lined with empty Jameson bottles

The inside is lined with empty Jameson bottles

Ok here's rule 2 of Lunch Buddies; no one can get the exact same thing. That defeats the purpose of everyone trying something new, duh.  Now that sounds easy, but it's really hard to do. Here's our go at it...

Fried Buffalo Chicken, This Pork is a Jerk, Nuts & Berries with Bacon

Chick-N-Fill-Ay, Memphis Original, Flatiron Steak

So we were successful in getting completely different options. There are more choices in the menu, by the way. You could probably come up with a 1000 combinations. We might have to accept that challenge.

This lamp is amazing!! I've always wanted one!

Go check out The Slider Inn if you're in the Midtown area. They are on the corner of Peabody and Cooper.

SweetPea's Table Popup Review

image.jpg

I was down in Olive Branch, Mississippi today trying to decide what to have for lunch. I found a spot called SweetPea's Table on Yelp and got my little sister to tag along with me. Normally, I'd be way more prepared, but I think the Popup is a great way to get people the best info about a place.

Basically, I'm doing this review without my notes, camera, or even laptop. Just my iPhone and winging it, so bear with me.

I had no clue what to expect when I walked into SweetPeas. I knew it was a meat and two place, which I absolutely love, but that was about it. I don't normally eat when I come to Mississippi, but today I was starving. I'm so glad I stopped.

The Atmosphere

image.jpg
image.jpg

There's nothing overly fancy about the place but it definitely has a traditional southern restaurant vibe. The staff was very welcoming and friendly, there was local artwork on the walls for sale, and even a stage with guitars and drums. I can tell this place is rocking some evenings. Seems like the whole town came out for lunch because it was packed!

The Food

The fried chicken was amazing! It literally tasted like the chicken my mom fried in a cast iron skillet. the green beans were seasoned very well and the mashed potatoes were also very good. I definitely wanted to take a nap after.

Catfish with Mac and cheese and Lima beans

My sister had the catfish. I had to sneak a piece of it from her and it was pretty good. She wasn't much on sharing today so I can at least say it looked good, but it think this picture below should speak for how well it tasted.....

Homemade from scratch banana pudding

Homemade from scratch banana pudding

Is there some type of award out there for banana pudding? Can I possibly nominate someones? I feel like this banana pudding is from a different dimension or from the future were it was perfected by many otherworldly  cooks on the art of banana pudding. I will say this with absolute confidence and without second guessing, this is hands down the best banana pudding I've eaten in my life! No question about it at all!

If you're in Olive Branch, Mississippi and you're looking for some good homecooking, do yourself a favor and stop by SweetPea's Table. i give it two things up, but I honestly wish I had more hands so I could give more.

SweetPea's Table is located at 8948 Midsouth Dr in Olive Branch, MS.

Patio lunch in December?

That's exactly what happened today! You can never predict the weather in Memphis and today was an absolutely wonderful day for lunch on a patio.

image.jpg

One of the better patio dining spots is Cafe Eclectic at 603 N McLean Blvd. I don't know if the staff or the food is the best part, because they are both amazing!

I had the BLT&A with a cup of fresh fruit, which was great. And I also had a bowl of mint chocolate ice cream because who doesn't want ice cream with lunch?
